How does ethnocentricity cause conflict?

In 1788, when the British came to colonize Australia, they looked at the way the Aboriginals lived in an ethnocentric manner causing conflict between the two cultures.The British saw the aboriginals as savages, uncivilized and animals. The aboriginals were looked upon as inferior by the British, who thought of themselves superior to them because of their inhumane ways of life. This ethnocentrism resulted in conflict between the British and the aboriginals. For example, the British went into the aboriginals farms where cops like yam was planted, and dug it up because it wasn’t what they liked. Instead they planted crops like potatoes and corn, which is what they were used to. The aboriginals were looked upon as animals, and animals can’t own land, which is why the British changed the crops to their liking, they felt superior to the aboriginals. Once the British arrived small pox broke out, leaving the aboriginals confused with the disease they had, and not knowing any type of treatment, many of them died. Bennelong, one of the aboriginal leaders, traveled back to England to learn the how they lived. He was the one holding the relationship and trust together between the British and the aboriginals, but to the British he was considered as once a savage, always a savage. While he was there he was a rum addict and lost respect because of it. After he decided to come back from journey to England he had chosen to to back to his normal lifestyle even though all his respect was lost from the British, he lost his place in his tribe, and his wife left him. After that the British realized they couldn’t make these people live a civilized life. It was wrong and inconsiderate for the British to just come in a take over the land and create a bias point of view to the people settled their. If the British would have come to the new land open and not bias towards the people these conflicts would never of occurred, and they might have been able to learn and live with the aboriginals.

Julius Caesar (Acting)

Context:
Cassius and Brutus are talking inside Brutus’ tent. Cassius just implicated that Brutus accused a man for bribery even though Cassius knows the man is innocent. A fight begins to occur from this.

Why we chose this scene:
In this scene, the fight is when the conspirators actually start disagreeing with each other and finally start to express their thoughts and anger. From this scene on, the conspirators get into more and more fights with each other which eventually causes the conspiracy to break up.
This is also an important scene because this is the first time the two ‘leaders’ of the conspiracy are fighting. During this scene, we are shown the unsteadiness of Brutus and Cassius’ relationship, and also we are shown that both Brutus and Cassius hardly ever agree on the same strategy plan.

Act/Scene/Line:
Act 4 Scene 3. Lines 1-63

Passage:
CASSIUS: That you have wrong'd me doth appear in this:
You have condemn'd and noted Lucius Pella
For taking bribes here of the Sardians;
Wherein my letters, praying on his side,
Because I knew the man, were slighted off.

BRUTUS: You wronged yourself to write in such a case.

CASSIUS: In such a time as this it is not meet
That every nice offence should bear his comment.

BRUTUS: Let me tell you, Cassius, you yourself
Are much condemn'd to have an itching palm;
To sell and mart your offices for gold
To undeservers.

CASSIUS: I an itching palm!
You know that you are Brutus that speak this,
Or, by the gods, this speech were else your last.

BRUTUS: The name of Cassius honours this corruption,
And chastisement doth therefore hide his head.

CASSIUS: Chastisement!

BRUTUS: Remember March, the ides of March remember:
Did not great Julius bleed for justice' sake?
What villain touch'd his body, that did stab,
And not for justice? What, shall one of us
That struck the foremost man of all this world
But for supporting robbers, shall we now
Contaminate our fingers with base bribes,
And sell the mighty space of our large honours
For so much trash as may be grasped thus?
I had rather be a dog, and bay the moon,
Than such a Roman.

CASSIUS: Brutus, bay not me;
I'll not endure it: you forget yourself,
To hedge me in; I am a soldier, I,
Older in practise, abler than yourself
To make conditions.

BRUTUS: Go to; you are not, Cassius.

CASSIUS: I am.

BRUTUS: I say you are not.

CASSIUS: Urge me no more, I shall forget myself;
Have mind upon your health, tempt me no further.

BRUTUS:
Away, slight man!

CASSIUS:
Is't possible?

BRUTUS:
Hear me, for I will speak.
Must I give way and room to your rash choler?
Shall I be frighted when a madman stares?

CASSIUS: O ye gods, ye gods! must I endure all this?

BRUTUS: All this! ay, more: fret till your proud heart break;
Go show your slaves how choleric you are,
And make your bondmen tremble. Must I budge?
Must I observe you? must I stand and crouch
Under your testy humour? By the gods
You shall digest the venom of your spleen,
Though it do split you; for, from this day forth,
I'll use you for my mirth, yea, for my laughter,
When you are waspish.

CASSIUS:
Is it come to this?

BRUTUS: You say you are a better soldier:
Let it appear so; make your vaunting true,
And it shall please me well: for mine own part,
I shall be glad to learn of noble men.

CASSIUS:
You wrong me every way; you wrong me, Brutus;
I said, an elder soldier, not a better:
Did I say 'better'?

BRUTUS: If you did, I care not.

CASSIUS:
When Caesar lived, he durst not thus have moved me.

BRUTUS:
Peace, peace! you durst not so have tempted him.

CASSIUS: I durst not!

BRUTUS: No

CASSIUS: What, durst not tempt him!

BRUTUS: For your life you durst not!

My Learning Profile

My learning profile

I am a gestalt and logic learner with an ‘I’ Learning Profile. (Gestalt Dominant)

I learn best by focusing on the whole picture, and emotional relevance to myself, I find work more interesting if it is either related to me or I find it interesting and want to learn more about it. I also learn best and grasp the information when I can see or hear something. Something that helps me a LOT when I am learning something or I have to do a project on is having an example. I love examples, they allow me to know exactly what I am supposed to be doing, and can give me some creative ideas. I also learn best when I get engaged in the work, like asking questions or contributing to the conversation on the topic. Watching a documentary or a video also contributes to how I learn, it REALLY helps me to have a visual when learning something new, I can get the big picture, and then once I understand the big picture I can get into the details that I have to know.

I need to be able to see and hear the whole image/sound and its emotional elements to learn. It helps he to learn when I can see or know what the outcome will be, like examples of what I need to do. Something I need to work on is piecing together information. It is something that I struggle with, it is hard for me to write a research paper because I really have to think about all the details and piece them together to form a paragraph, and eventually the whole report. I need to get involved in whatever the class is doing, so that I can take away information that I was a part of and understood, rather then just sitting their listening, I will more likely remember something if I am a part of it.

The strategies that would help me in my learning are showing me examples. Also placing me in the middle front of the room where I can access my dominant ear and eye. I like a balance of art, music, movement, and collaborating with others. What I think would help me a lot is talking about the topic, so I remember it easier, and understand. I almost always listen to music when I work at home, it is hard for me to just sit down and work, I either get distracted or bored very easily. I think what would help me with that is taking little breaks in between, so that I am not working for hours and hours on end, but I have a little rest time. Music really helps me focus, my mom always says to turn it off, but I work better with it on. I think that if I do some of the things that might help me, I will take more knowledge away from the topic that we were working on.

I would like my teachers to know that I like to fiddle with stuff. During a test, I get distracted very easily and sometimes play with my eraser, it is very hard for me to just sit down for a long period of time and work. Most of the time I do study, but I sometimes find it hard to know what material to study and some effective study habits.I would love to get to know some study habits that would help me to memorize and get the knowledge in my head before a test or assessment. My biggest challenge is to access information and be able to put it together in a linear logical manner so that they can then communicate. I have a HUGE amount of trouble with writing essays and research paper, because I can get the facts (no problem), but putting it together to create a paper is a whole other concept for me. That is something I need to work on, for future essays and research papers. I think that I am doing okay in humanities but with some of the things I learned about myself, I can become an even better student, that learns a lot, that takes away and applies that knowledge to everyday life.
